When the Personal Demands of Nigerians Outweigh their Communal Requests to Political Office Holders

Image
As another election cycle ticks and political campaigns begin soon in accordance with INEC’s 2026 timetable, this publication becomes necessary and timely. I was at a gas station some weeks back, and as my car's tank was being filled, the petrol attendant spoke loudly to her colleague, expressing her strong desire that a current State Commissioner (whose portfolio was not mentioned in the open conversation) should not be returned by his second-term-seeking Governor come year 2027. Her curious listener asked why, and she yelled in pidgin English, “The man na stingy man; I send am invitation card for my mama burial, but e come there, and he no drop any envelope. Na only spray he spray me small money when we dey dance”. Her biased perception of that political officeholder immediately stirred my thoughts that most Nigerians forget that we all have unlimited individual needs and wants that no one man or woman occupying a political office can ever satisfy, and, in any case, they were n...

Aside Asphalt or Concrete, When Shall we Lay Safety and Sanity on Nigerian Roads?

In an era of rapid urbanization and transnational competition for development, Nigeria’s public transport system lags. It is one sector replete with varying degrees of unpleasant experiences for commuters across rural, semi-urban, and urban settlements. The undignified treatment of passengers is palpable, to the point that it often masks any effort by Federal, State, or Local governments to make our motorways safer or saner. Remember, these roads remain Nigerians’ primary mode of transportation. What does it profit a Nigerian city, therefore, to have a recently constructed road well laid with either asphalt or concrete technology, yet burdened with the inappropriate carriage of Nigerians and their goods by private operators of our public transpor...

The twelve categories of healthcare providers in Nigeria, as computed by Dr. Adetolu Ademujimi, Sartorius Resources, Nigeria. In August 2023, I published an article titled “ First Eleven Providers Patting Health Care: Fierce elements for Professor Pate’s Headship’s Cure” (see the link https://sartoriusresources.blogspot.com/2023/08/first-eleven-providers-patting-health.html )   as a deep dive into the array of real and quasi-health care providers in Nigeria. One important message of that publication was the need for the Federal Ministry of Health, working with its 36 States & FCT counterparts, to beam its regulatory and collaborative lights beyond the conventional healthcare facilities owned by the Federal & State governments. In the concluding phase of that lengthy article, I made some recommendations to strengthen the regulatory mandate of the national & subnational Ministries of Health over non-conventional healthcare facilities as well as their conventiona...
